Popular Things to do in Coniston

Here are 8 popular things to do in Coniston, most of which will appeal to holidaymakers of all ages and interests.

Coniston Launch

Even if you’ve already been aboard the Windermere Lake Cruises, you can never have to much of a good thing. That’s why we fully recommend a trip on the Coniston Launch, even if it’s a means for getting from A to B.

Steam Yacht Gondola

Staying with water travel, the Steam Yacht Gondola offers a somewhat unique experience in Coniston. Restored from its former glory, the Victorian steam-powered cruise transports passengers between Coniston and the Furness Railway.

Coniston Boating Centre

If you prefer to take to the water yourself, rowing boats are available to hire from the Coniston Boating Centre. While canoes and kayaks maybe for the more experienced rower, the calm waters are a wonderful and romantic way to travel. So why not hire a boat and become the captain of Coniston water.

The Ruskin Museum

Back on dry land and one of the most popular things to do in Coniston is to spend the afternoon at the Ruskin Museum. As well as an informative insight into the region, the museum pays homage to one of Coniston’s most famous former residents, John Ruskin. Not only that, but there’s an exhibition about Donald Campbell and his record-breaking speedboat.

Brantwood Art Centre

Another building dedicated to the art critic, social thinker and philanthropist John Ruskin is that of his former home at Brantwood. As well as an intriguing and impressive 18th-century mansion, the art centre is popular due to its beautiful grounds overlooking Coniston Water.

Old Man of Coniston

The stunning views from up on the Old Man of Coniston are best witnessed as part of the 3.7 mile circular walk. Taking in nearby Ambleside along the way, this is a wonderful introduction to fell walking. Especially given it’s an achievable distance for most hikers, that can be done in a reasonable timeframe.

Coniston 14 Road Race

If you prefer to pick up the pace a little, then the road race is somewhat more of a challenge. Albeit one that’s met with equally rewarding scenery. The event attracts over 1.5k runners each year, taking place mid-March. Applications for the 2020 race have recently closed, although that doesn’t mean you can’t start training for next year instead!

Lakeland Country Fair

August in the Lake District is a time traditional country fairs are in full swing. Non-more-so though at Torver near Coniston. Expect to see all the usual displays of fell ponies, foxhounds and falconry, along with an array of arts and craft.
