August Bank Holiday in the Lake District

The Lake District is wonderful to visit all year round. However, August Bank Holiday in the Lake District can be pretty special. It’s often the heat of the summer, the tourists have descended on Cumbria and there are plenty of local events to enjoy.

Of course, there’s more to the Lake District than the countryside, but it’s certainly a fantastic place to start. You can step out of your spa suite and you’ll only be a short walk away from the largest body of water in the region. Lake Windermere is a great location to sit and relax, taking in your beautiful surroundings. Then there’s the chance to embrace the water. Take a cruise on the lake, dive in and enjoy a swim or pack a picnic and chill out along the water’s edge.

Country Shows and Festivals

Wherever you stay in the Lake District this Bank Holiday, you won’t be too far away from a traditional Country Show. It’s an ideal time of year to thoroughly understand Cumberland life, taking part in some of its long-standing traditions.

In fact, they don’t come much more traditional than at events such as the Keswick show on the Bank Holiday Monday. What’s more, Keswick is fairly close to Windermere and provides one of the most popular events in Cumbria.

Expect to find farmers showing off prize-winning animals, along with the locals selling their arts and crafts. If you fancy a smaller rural show, then Bootle Village hosts the annual Black Combe fair each year. The principle is much the same, along with the fell running and other competitions.

On the Bank Holiday Friday, the Broughton in Furness Show also focusses on country life. While elsewhere the Kentmere Sheep Show and Patterdale Dog Day are very much for the animal lovers out there.
