If you’re taking an early holiday to Cumbria this year, then make the most of the beautiful countryside and venture outside. There are plenty of outdoor activities in the Lake District in March. Long walks and hiking trails are perfect for those who love nature. Alternatively, step it up a gear and use them for a challenging run.

River cruises on Lake Windermere and Coniston Water are of course popular all year round. There are lots of other things to do in these areas too, with Windermere attracting the most tourists.

14h March – Cumbria Wildlife Trust, Eycott Hill Nature Reserve

We will start off at a gentle pace with this one, where you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Eycott Nature Reserve. This nature walk takes place at 10.30am for 2 hours hiking across the fells of the Lake District.

24th March – Coniston 14 Road Race

Entries close on the 1st March, so if you’re feeling fit then send off your application form as soon as possible. Join the annual event in Coniston, where you can arrive in style if you jump on a ferry cruise from Windermere. Which coincidentally is the perfect location for a spa hotel with your own private hot tub to relax in after the race!

The route lasts for just under 14 miles, taking you around Coniston Water. Ensure you keep up your training regime right until in the final weeks, when you will no doubt need a deep sports massage as a reward.

25th March – The Wheelbase Spring Classic Cycle Sportive

If you prefer two wheels in exchange for running on foot, then the Wheelbase Spring Classic Cycle Sportive is still accepting applicants. Choose between a 56 mile course or the shorter 34 miles.

Whichever distance you decide you deserve to book a boutique hotel and make a weekend of it. The race takes place just outside from Kendal, which is just a 15 minute train ride away from Lake Windermere.

While the great British whether may rain on your ideas, don’t let it dampen your spirit. You never know what wildlife you may see in the unpredictable weather or it could be a blessing when it comes to those sporting activities.

Alternatively join one of many Lake District Tours, where you can experience the outdoors with a guide by your side. Walking tours are a great way of getting around, not just across the hills and mountains but through villages and towns too.

Then the lakes themselves, there are steam boats and public transport available for getting about from A to B or take a gentle stroll by the water. You can hire a private yacht on Lake Windermere or just stay at your hotel and celebrate spring time in your private garden.
